Alogliptin therapy improved glycemic control | |
03:48' PM - Thứ tư, 17/12/2008 | | Alogliptin monotherapy was well tolerated and improved glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes without increasing the incidence of hypoglycemia.
Researchers investigated the DPP-IV inhibitor alogliptin in patients who were drug naive and had poorly controlled type 2 diabetes. They randomly assigned patients with inadequately controlled diabetes to once-daily 12.5 mg alogliptin (n=133), 25 mg alogliptin (n=131) or placebo (n=65), all over the course of 26 weeks.
The mean change in HbA1c was –0.56% for the 12.5-mg group, –0.59% for the 25-mg group and –0.02% for the placebo group (P<.001), according to the study.
Reductions in fasting plasma glucose were greater in the alogliptin group than in the placebo group (P<.001). Incidences of adverse events (67.4% to 70.3%) and hypoglycemia (1.5% to 3%) were similar, according to the researchers.
“The efficacy and safety of alogliptin monotherapy were comparable with those of other DPP-IV inhibitors,” the researchers wrote. “Alogliptin represents an effective treatment option whether given alone or in combination with antihypertensive agents from other classes.” – by Christen Haigh
